Eating Disorder ICD-10 Codes: F50 Anorexia, Bulimia and Binge Eating
Codes verified against the CMS FY2027 ICD-10-CM code descriptions (effective October 1, 2026; these codes are unchanged from FY2026). Reviewed . See sources.
What are the ICD-10 codes for eating disorders?
Eating disorders are coded in category F50. Anorexia nervosa is F50.0-, bulimia nervosa is F50.2-, and binge eating disorder is F50.81-. In FY2027 these carry severity or remission characters, such as F50.21 for mild bulimia nervosa and F50.810 for mild binge eating disorder. F50.9 is eating disorder, unspecified.
Category F50, Eating disorders, sits in the behavioral syndromes section of Chapter 5 of ICD-10-CM. The anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder subcategories each carry severity or remission characters in the FY2027 tabular list, so a code that stops at F50.0, F50.2 or F50.81 is not complete.
This page lists the F50 codes with their official FY2027 descriptions, explains the severity inclusion terms and the Excludes notes in the tabular list, and shows what a session note should contain so the diagnosis is supported. For the related anxiety and mood codes that appear in some records, see the anxiety guide and the depression guide.

Which anorexia nervosa code fits the documented type and severity?
Anorexia nervosa is split by type (restricting, or binge eating/purging) and then by severity or remission. In the FY2027 tabular list, each severity code has inclusion terms that give the body mass index range the classification associates with that level. They are printed in the table below. The Official Guidelines base code assignment on the provider's diagnostic statement, not on the clinical criteria the provider used (Section I.A.19), so the severity that goes on the claim is the one the clinician documents.
The unspecified codes exist for records that do not give the type or the severity: F50.00 for anorexia nervosa, unspecified, and F50.019 and F50.029 for a documented type with severity unspecified.
| Code | Official description (FY2027) | Billable | When it fits |

How are bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder coded?
Bulimia nervosa (F50.2-) and binge eating disorder (F50.81-) are split by severity or remission, and the tabular list gives weekly episode counts as inclusion terms. For bulimia nervosa the counts are of inappropriate compensatory behavior per week; for binge eating disorder they are of binge eating episodes per week. As with anorexia nervosa, the severity on the claim is the one the clinician documents.
| Code | Official description (FY2027) | Billable | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| F50.21 | Bulimia nervosa, mild | Yes | Inclusion term: 1-3 episodes of inappropriate compensatory behavior per week. |
| F50.22 | Bulimia nervosa, moderate | Yes | Inclusion term: 4-7 episodes of inappropriate compensatory behavior per week. |
| F50.23 | Bulimia nervosa, severe | Yes | Inclusion term: 8-13 episodes of inappropriate compensatory behavior per week. |
| F50.24 | Bulimia nervosa, extreme | Yes | Inclusion term: 14 or more episodes of inappropriate compensatory behavior per week. |
| F50.25 | Bulimia nervosa, in remission | Yes | Inclusion terms: in full remission, in partial remission. |
| F50.810 | Binge eating disorder, mild | Yes | Inclusion term: 1-3 binge eating episodes per week. |
| F50.811 | Binge eating disorder, moderate | Yes | Inclusion term: 4-7 binge eating episodes per week. |
| F50.812 | Binge eating disorder, severe | Yes | Inclusion term: 8-13 binge eating episodes per week. |
| F50.813 | Binge eating disorder, extreme | Yes | Inclusion term: 14 or more eating episodes per week. |
| F50.814 | Binge eating disorder, in remission | Yes | Inclusion terms: in full remission, in partial remission. |
| F50.819 | Binge eating disorder, unspecified | Yes | Binge eating disorder with severity not documented. |
What do the F50 Excludes notes mean?
Category F50 carries Excludes1 notes for anorexia NOS (R63.0), feeding problems of newborn (P92.-) and polyphagia (R63.2), and Excludes2 notes for feeding difficulties (R63.3-) and feeding disorder in infancy or childhood (F98.2-). R63.0, Anorexia, is the symptom code for loss of appetite, and it is not used for anorexia nervosa. Excludes1 means the excluded code should never be reported at the same time, unless the conditions are unrelated; Excludes2 means the excluded condition is not part of the code but both can be reported when both are documented (Official Guidelines Section I.A.12).
Within the family, F50.02 (anorexia nervosa, binge eating/purging type) has an Excludes1 note for bulimia nervosa (F50.2-), and F50.2 has a matching Excludes1 note for F50.02-, so one of the two is chosen for a given presentation. F50.0 has an Excludes1 note for loss of appetite (R63.0) and psychogenic loss of appetite (F50.89).
Which code covers ARFID, atypical presentations and other specified eating disorders?
Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder has its own code, F50.82. Pica and rumination disorder in adults are F50.83 and F50.84, and their childhood forms are coded in F98 (F98.3 and F98.21). F50.89 is titled Other specified eating disorder, and F50.9, Eating disorder, unspecified, lists atypical anorexia nervosa, atypical bulimia nervosa, feeding or eating disorder unspecified and other specified feeding disorder among its inclusion terms.
Because "other specified feeding disorder" appears as an inclusion term under F50.9 while F50.89 carries the title Other specified eating disorder, read both entries in the tabular list and use the code that matches the clinician's documented wording.
How does the eating disorder code connect to the CPT code?
The ICD-10-CM code says why the client is being seen; the CPT code says what service was provided. A 53 minute individual session for a client with a documented eating disorder is reported as CPT 90837 with the F50 code as the diagnosis, and the initial evaluation is reported as CPT 90791. Which diagnoses and services a payer covers varies by payer and plan. Confirm with the payer before billing.
What should the session note show?
- The diagnosis in words as the treating clinician states it, including the type and severity or remission specifier the code depends on.
- Where the severity comes from: the data point the clinician used, with its date, such as a recorded body mass index or the client-reported weekly episode count.
- Remission status only when the clinician documents it (in full or in partial remission).
- Eating, restricting, bingeing or compensatory behavior as the client reports or the clinician observes it this session.
- Coordination with the client's medical provider, when it happened, with who was contacted and when.
- The intervention used, the client's response, and progress toward a treatment plan goal.
- Draft the session note in SOAP or DAP format so the assessment and plan are easy to find. The free SOAP note generator drafts the note from what you enter.
Common mistakes
- Reporting F50.0, F50.2 or F50.81 without the remaining characters. They are headings, so the claim is invalid.
- Reporting F50.01 or F50.02 without the sixth character for severity or remission.
- Using R63.0, the symptom code for loss of appetite, for anorexia nervosa.
- Reporting a bulimia nervosa code together with an anorexia nervosa, binge eating/purging type code despite the Excludes1 notes.
- Choosing a severity code with no severity documented. Use the unspecified code for the type instead.
- A diagnosis on the claim that never appears in the session note.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ICD-10 code for anorexia nervosa?
Anorexia nervosa is F50.0-. F50.00 is anorexia nervosa, unspecified. When the type is documented, the code continues into F50.01- for restricting type or F50.02- for binge eating/purging type, with a sixth character for severity or remission.
What is the ICD-10 code for bulimia nervosa?
Bulimia nervosa is F50.2-. F50.20 is bulimia nervosa, unspecified, and F50.21 to F50.25 cover mild, moderate, severe, extreme and in remission. The FY2027 inclusion terms give weekly episode counts for each severity level.
What is the ICD-10 code for binge eating disorder?
Binge eating disorder is F50.81-. F50.810 is mild, F50.811 moderate, F50.812 severe, F50.813 extreme, F50.814 in remission and F50.819 unspecified. Each severity code has weekly binge episode counts as inclusion terms.
What is the ICD-10 code for ARFID?
F50.82, Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder. Its inclusion term covers avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder in remission.
What is the ICD-10 code for an unspecified eating disorder?
F50.9, Eating disorder, unspecified. Its inclusion terms include atypical anorexia nervosa, atypical bulimia nervosa, feeding or eating disorder unspecified and other specified feeding disorder.
Is F50 a billable code?
No. F50 is a category heading, and subcategories such as F50.0, F50.2 and F50.81 are headings too. A billable code carries every required character, such as F50.21 or F50.810.
Does the eating disorder code decide the level of care?
No. The code records the diagnosis and its documented severity or remission status. It does not set the level of care, treatment or coverage. Those depend on the clinician's assessment and the payer's rules.
Did the eating disorder codes change for FY2027?
No. The FY2027 addenda list no additions, deletions or description changes for category F50. The F50.01-, F50.02-, F50.2- and F50.81- severity and remission codes shown here are the FY2027 codes. FY2027 took effect October 1, 2026.
