ABA CPT Codes: The Full List and the 2027 Changes

Codes verified against the AMA CPT Editorial Panel September 2025 summary of actions, the AMA CPT 2027 release, and the ABA Coding Coalition 2027 code list, crosswalk and supplemental guidance. Reviewed . See sources.

What are the ABA CPT codes?

Through December 31, 2026, ABA services are reported with the adaptive behavior CPT codes 97151 to 97158 and Category III codes 0362T and 0373T, billed per 15 minutes. A revised set takes effect January 1, 2027, revising 97151 to 97158, deleting 0362T and 0373T, and adding six the ABA Coding Coalition lists as 97148, 97149, 97159, 97160, 97173 and 97180.

CPT calls applied behavior analysis "adaptive behavior services". The codes cover assessment, treatment by a technician, treatment and direction by a qualified health care professional (QHP) such as a BCBA, and caregiver guidance, and every code is counted in 15-minute units. The AMA CPT Editorial Panel accepted a revised code set in September 2025, and the AMA released the CPT 2027 code set on September 9, 2026, with changes taking effect January 1, 2027.

This page lists the codes in effect through December 31, 2026, the 2027 codes as the ABA Coding Coalition publishes them, a crosswalk between the two, and what each session note should show. Code descriptions here are short paraphrases; the full descriptors are in the AMA CPT codebook. The individual code pages for 97151, 97152, 97153, 97154, 97155 and 97156 describe the 2026 codes in more detail.

What changes in 2027?

The AMA's September 2025 Summary of Panel Actions records the change as accepted: six codes added for reporting adaptive behavior services (listed there under the placeholders 97X1X to 97X6X), revised guidelines, revised codes 97151 to 97158, and deletion of 0362T and 0373T, effective January 2027. The summary also says codes are not assigned, and exact wording is not final, until just before publication. The AMA released the CPT 2027 code set on September 9, 2026, effective January 1.

The ABA Coding Coalition, which filed the code change application with the ABAI ABA Billing Codes Commission, then published the final numbers and descriptors on its billing codes page and in a 2027 crosswalk dated September 11, 2026. The table below is built from those coalition documents as read on October 18, 2026. The AMA press release does not list individual codes, so the code numbers here are the coalition's.

97173Treatment with analysis delivered directly by the QHP to one clientQHP15 minutes
97180Non-face-to-face QHP work: reviewing data and session notes, deciding whether to change targets, goals or protocols, planning further assessment, discharge or transition planning, and training technicians on the client's protocolsQHP, personally15 minutes, which the coalition says may be reported once a week by adding up the past seven days

Which ABA codes are revised in 2027?

All of 97151 to 97158 are revised. The coalition's 2027 supplemental guidance says the term "protocol modification" is replaced with "analysis" in every code a QHP administers. Analysis means the QHP watches the client's or caregiver's responses and decides whether targets or protocols need to change; the guidance says a change is not required to report the code, but the analysis must be documented in the session note, and it cannot be done by a technician.

The biggest practical change is 97155. In 2027 it describes the QHP directing a technician, with analysis, face-to-face with the client. The coalition guidance says 97155 is no longer a dual-use code: when the QHP treats the client directly without a technician, the service is 97173. The technician codes 97152, 97153 and 97154 lose the phrase "under the direction of a physician or other qualified health care professional", and 97156, 97157 and 97158 become guidance or treatment "with analysis".

How do the 2026 codes cross over to 2027?

This crosswalk follows the ABA Coding Coalition's 2027 code conversion table. Authorizations written for 2026 may need new lines for 97173 and 97180, and the coalition's sample authorization splits 2026 97155 units into 97155 for direction of a technician and 97173 for direct QHP treatment.

Which ABA codes can a BCBA bill, and which can an RBT deliver?

The code descriptors name two kinds of staff: a physician or other QHP, and a technician. The coalition's crosswalk defines a QHP as a licensed behavior analyst, licensed assistant behavior analyst, BCBA-D, BCBA, BCaBA, or another credentialed professional whose scope of practice, training and competence include ABA. The BACB describes the BCBA as a graduate-level certification whose holders are independent practitioners, and the RBT as a paraprofessional certification whose holders practice under the direction and close supervision of an RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator.

In practice, that means a BCBA or other QHP delivers 97151, 97155, 97156, 97157 and 97158, plus 97173 and 97180 from 2027, while 97152, 97153 and 97154, plus 97148, 97149, 97159 and 97160 from 2027, are typically delivered by an RBT or other technician. The coalition's crosswalk notes that a QHP may substitute for the technician on 97153, and its 2027 guidance says a QHP who fills in for a technician without adding analysis reports 97153. Who may deliver and bill each code is set by state licensure law and each payer's policy, not by CPT alone. The coalition notes that 40 states and the District of Columbia have behavior analyst licensure laws, and that education-level modifiers such as HM, HN, HO and HP are commonly used with these codes. Payer rules vary, so check each contract.

Which codes are assessment codes and which are treatment codes?

The coalition groups the 2027 code set into three families:

  • Assessment: 97151 (QHP), 97152 (technician), and 97148 with add-on 97149 (harmful behavior, two or more technicians).
  • Non-face-to-face services: 97180 (QHP), new in 2027.
  • Treatment: 97153 and 97154 (technician), 97159 with add-on 97160 (harmful behavior, two or more technicians), 97155 (QHP direction of a technician), 97173 (QHP treatment), 97156 and 97157 (caregiver guidance) and 97158 (QHP group treatment).

How do 15-minute units work for ABA codes?

Every ABA code is timed in 15-minute increments. The coalition's 2027 guidance applies the CPT rule for timed codes: a unit may be reported once half the increment is met, so 8 to 22 minutes of direct service is one unit, and work lasting less than 8 minutes is not reportable. Payers can set their own unit rules, so check each policy. The 8-minute rule calculator explains the related unit methods used for Medicare therapy codes.

Two details are specific to the 2027 codes. For harmful-behavior treatment, 97159 already represents two technicians, so it is not doubled; time for a third, fourth or fifth technician goes on 97160 (or 97149 for assessment). And 97180 is summed across a seven-day week, such as Sunday to Saturday, and reported once for that week. The guidance also says 97180 does not include time spent writing session notes.

What should the session note show for each code?

Each code's note has to show the elements of that code. The coalition's clinical examples are explicit that analysis, direction and the need for extra technicians must be documented. The individual code pages list more detail, and the ABA session note generator drafts the session note from what you type.

What the session note should show for each ABA code
CodeWhat the note should show
97151Assessment methods, face-to-face and non-face-to-face time, findings and baseline data, and recommended goals and service hours.
97152The assessment protocol the technician ran, face-to-face time and the data collected.
97153Targets worked on, the protocol followed, data, the client's response, start and stop times and who delivered the session.
97154The group size and the individual treatment plan goals addressed with each client.
97155Which technician was directed, what direction was given, the QHP's analysis, and the decision to adjust protocols or leave them unchanged.
97156Caregivers present, protocols or targets discussed or trained, and how the caregivers performed.
97173Treatment the QHP delivered, the analysis of the client's responses, and any adjustments needed, or that none were needed.
97148, 97159The medical necessity for multiple technicians, the services each technician provided, and the customized environment.
97180Each activity and its time across the seven-day period, such as data review or technician training, not note writing.

Do payers cover ABA telehealth codes?

Coverage varies. The coalition's 2027 guidance says CMS added the 2019 adaptive behavior codes to its permanent Medicare telehealth list in 2026, but that telehealth coverage still depends on state law and each payer's policy. For the harmful-behavior codes, the coalition says the on-site QHP requirement may be met by telehealth when medically necessary and clinically appropriate, while noting that payer policies and laws vary. Check each payer's 2027 telehealth policy for the new codes before billing them, and see the telehealth modifiers guide for modifier and place of service basics.

What should ABA providers check before January 1, 2027?

Payers update their policies, fee schedules and authorizations on their own timelines, so there is no single switch-over date beyond the January 1, 2027 effective date. The coalition publishes a payer communication guide (October 2026), the 2027 crosswalk and the 2027 supplemental guidance on its resources page. Useful checks: which codes each payer will accept on and after January 1, whether open authorizations carry over or need new lines for 97173 and 97180, which modifiers the payer requires, and whether your note templates capture analysis and direction for 97155 and 97173.

What should the session note show?

  • The code billed and the staff member who delivered it, with their credential.
  • Start and stop times, or total face-to-face minutes, so the 15-minute units can be counted.
  • The targets and protocols addressed, the data collected and the client's response.
  • For QHP codes, the analysis: what the QHP observed and whether targets or protocols were changed or kept.
  • For harmful-behavior codes, why multiple technicians were needed and what each one did.
  • Draft the ABA session note with the ABA session note generator from what you type, then review and edit it.

Common mistakes

  • Billing 0362T or 0373T for dates of service on or after January 1, 2027.
  • Reporting 97155 in 2027 for one-to-one treatment the QHP delivers directly. The coalition says that is 97173.
  • Reporting 97155 at the same time as 97173 for the same client. The coalition guidance says that would be duplicative.
  • Counting time spent writing session notes as 97180.
  • Doubling 97159 for its two technicians instead of adding 97160 only for a third or later technician.
  • Assuming a payer will accept the new codes on January 1 without checking its policy and the client's authorization.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the ABA CPT codes for 2026?

Through December 31, 2026, ABA is reported with 97151 to 97158 and the Category III codes 0362T and 0373T. 97151 is QHP assessment, 97152 technician supporting assessment, 97153 and 97154 technician treatment, 97155 QHP treatment with protocol modification, and 97156 to 97158 caregiver and group services.

What are the new ABA CPT codes for 2027?

The ABA Coding Coalition lists six new codes effective January 1, 2027: 97148 and add-on 97149 for harmful-behavior assessment, 97159 and add-on 97160 for harmful-behavior treatment, 97173 for direct QHP treatment with analysis, and 97180 for QHP non-face-to-face services.

What CPT codes can a BCBA bill?

A BCBA is a qualified health care professional for these codes, so the QHP codes apply: 97151, 97155, 97156, 97157 and 97158, plus 97173 and 97180 from 2027. Whether a BCBA bills under their own provider number depends on state law and payer policy.

What is CPT 97155?

Through 2026, 97155 is adaptive behavior treatment with protocol modification by a QHP, which may include directing a technician. From January 1, 2027, it covers only the QHP directing a technician with analysis while the client is present, and direct QHP treatment moves to 97173.

Is 0373T still valid in 2027?

No. The AMA CPT Editorial Panel accepted the deletion of 0362T and 0373T effective January 2027. The ABA Coding Coalition maps 0373T to 97159 and 97160, and 0362T to 97148 and 97149.

Can an RBT deliver 97173 or 97180?

No. Both are QHP codes. The coalition guidance says analysis requires the training and competence of a QHP and may not be administered by a technician.

Does WellNotes choose ABA codes or bill them?

No. WellNotes drafts the ABA session note from what you type, and you review and edit it. It does not choose codes, bill or submit claims.
