Customize Note Tone, Length & Style for Clinical Documentation
Adjust clinical note tone (clinical, empathetic, concise), length (brief to detailed), and section distribution. Tailor documentation to your practice style.
Last updated: March 2026
Every clinician has a preferred documentation style. WellNotes lets you control the tone, length, and structure of your generated notes so they match your clinical voice. Choose a clinical tone for formal third-person documentation, an empathetic tone for person-centered language, or a concise tone for quick, direct notes. Set the length from brief (2-3 sentences per section) to detailed (extended narrative), and control how detail is distributed across note sections.
Step-by-step
- 1
Open the style panel
In the Note Editor, click the "Style" button (sliders icon) near the Generate button to expand the style panel.
- 2
Choose a tone
Select the clinical tone: Clinical (formal, third-person language), Empathetic (warm, person-centered language), or Concise (direct, minimal prose).
- 3
Set note length
Choose Brief (2–3 sentences per section), Standard (full paragraph per section), or Detailed (extended narrative). Standard is recommended for most insurance documentation.
- 4
Adjust distribution
Balanced distributes equal depth across all sections. Prioritized focuses most detail on the Assessment and Plan sections, which are typically most clinically important.
- 5
Save preferences
Your style preferences are automatically saved and applied to all future notes until you change them.
Tips
- Clinical tone is recommended for insurance-submitted documentation.
- Detailed length is useful for complex cases or treatment plan documents.
- You can change style settings per note without affecting your saved defaults.
